Father’s Day 2011

(Posted: June 18, 2011)

Tomorrow, June 19, is Father’s Day. My Father has been gone for seven years and, of course, Father’s Day will never be the same without him but it will always have the same special meaning. I think of Dad every day and try to remember as much as I can about him, particularly on Father’s Day. I have written some of my memories of the years growing up with my Father and this is the perfect time to share one of them. And I think that now and then, on special days, I will just add to these recollections of my Father’s postwar years as my Dad . . . . .

My father was always building things for us kids. The best thing ever was our playhouse. Hours were spent in our little house that was furnished with old furniture. We used to put on shows and charge $.10 for admission. Nobody was going to get rich but we were the only show in the neighborhood. It was a sad day when the playhouse was torn down. It had become vacant as we all outgrew it but it was as if part of our childhood had disappeared also. I remember dad tearing it apart and burning everything that he could. Eventually it was replaced with something that would better serve the family than a “playhouse” . . . a garage.
