Notebook Cover – Stalag Luft 6 & 4

(Posted: June 24, 2011)

This is the first of the pages of my Father’s POW notebooks that I plan to add.  I had felt the need to interpret the meaning of each page of these books before I could put anything together.

As indicated, this is the cover of my father’s notebook “Stalag Luft 6 & 4. He dresses it up by drawing the scrolls above his name. On the second line he has his serial number 32830356 and POW number 1277 written. His name, rank and serial number would have been repeated many times during interrogation. That is the only information my father would give.

It is fascinating to see the shading of a B-17 under the block containing my father’s identification demonstrating his proud affiliation with the “Queen of the Sky”.

How my father could return home with his notebooks during his trying and difficult journeys from camp to camp seems a miracle to me. How fortunate that he was able to hang onto them under extreme duress enabling his daughter to possess the groundwork for his story – the story that he could not bear to talk about.
